Edinburgh Artist Sally Richardson Shortlisted for Inaugural Hogarth Art Prize

EDINBURGH, UK

Sally Richardson, has been named a finalist for the first-ever Hogarth Art Prize. Her oil painting, "The Artist's Kitchen," captured the attention, of the selection panel from among 1500 entries.

“In its inaugural year, the Hogarth Prize recognises outstanding contemporary British artwork and creativity across a range of practices and ideas.

With an emphasis on traditional techniques, original thinking, and Hogarth’s rebellious ideals of invention and challenge, the Prize will be awarded to an individual artist whose work demonstrates exceptional technical skill and meaningful engagement with contemporary culture.

The exhibition will be held at Hogarth’s House (the former home of William Hogarth), now a historic house, contemporary gallery, and learning centre in Chiswick, London.

One of Britain's most influential artists, Hogarth was a painter, engraver, writer, and businessman known for his sharp social commentary and outspoken resistance to the artistic establishment. His work challenged injustice, corruption, and moral hypocrisy, and his influence continues to resonate today.

The Hogarth Prize honours his keen observational eye, technical skill, and rebellious spirit. Reflecting this legacy, the Hogarth Prize offers an inclusive platform for creativity, presenting a diverse range of wall-based artwork across disciplines.” Hogarth Prize 2026

Sally said that having her work hung on the walls of William Hogarth's historic home was a wonderful opportunity and is looking forward to going to the opening and prize award ceremony on the 28th of July. Her piece, which weaves together an intimate interior with elements of storytelling,  highlights the high standard of contemporary painting coming out of Scotland today.
